Carbon-Fibre Roofs and Aero
From the E92 onward, the M3 has offered an exposed carbon-fibre roof panel, and the F80 and G80 add carbon mirror caps, spoilers and diffusers. Exposed carbon is finished in clear coat over the weave, and that clear coat is more sensitive to prolonged heat and trapped moisture than paint over metal. It can yellow or haze.
Practical guidance: indoors, cover freely with a soft cover. Outdoors, a breathable cover for normal periods is fine, but avoid leaving a car with a large exposed carbon area under a cover for months at a time in strong sun. Why Fit Beats Fabric
A well-fitted mid-grade cover protects better than a loose top-grade one. Slack fabric moves in wind, and moving fabric carrying dust behaves like a very fine polish against the clear coat, concentrated on mirror caps, arch edges and the boot spoiler.

Mistakes That Damage M3 Paint
- Covering a dirty car. Grit between fabric and clear coat is an abrasive. Wash first, every time.
- Covering a wet car. Trapped water causes spotting and haze. Let it dry first.
- Long-term outdoor covering over exposed carbon. Fine indoors, riskier outdoors in strong sun.
- Treating matte or Frozen paint like gloss. It cannot be polished out, so keeping contaminants off is the only real defence.
- Using a tarp. No breathability and an abrasive surface. Never a substitute.
